“If you don’t control your diary, you don’t really control the direction of your business.”
- Anthea Horvat
Be honest.
Does your diary run you, or do you run your diary?
Do you even have a diary? 🙈
When I work with clients, this is one of the first things we sort out.
Because your time is all you really have.
You trade it every day. And without rules, structure, and intention, scaling becomes almost impossible. The weeks roll into months. The months into years. And the results stay ...unspectacular. 😔
Being busy.
Being in demand.
Trying to be across everything.
That combination will eventually overwhelm you.
Your "working on" the business time disappears.
And you know that you are being reactive rather than proactive.
Here’s the truth. If you don’t control your diary, you don’t really control the direction of the business.
Your diary tells the truth.
If you are not strategic, before you know it, the diary is driving and you’re just along for the ride. 🏃🏻♀️➡️🏃🏻♀️➡️🏃🏻♀️➡️
At CEO level, the diary is no longer a scheduling tool.
It’s a necessity.
Most business owners don’t lack discipline. They lack boundaries. They struggle to say "no" or "not now."
They don't give themselves permission to have "thinking time."
Diaries fill with unimportant meetings, interruptions, and urgent but low-value tasks. Urgency takes over.
A broken diary has a cost.
Important decisions get rushed.
Things get missed.
The to-do list grows.
And you end up overwhelmed and ineffective. The business suffers. 🤯
Some people are naturally organised and can get by for a while without real diary structure.
But "getting by" doesn’t scale.
For more reactive types (like me), it eventually catches up. 🤭
At some point in your journey, you have to redesign your role. Redesign your responsibilities. And most importantly, redesign how you use your time.
Because if you don’t dominate your diary, it will dominate you.
So where do you start?
Look at next week’s diary and ask yourself one simple question.
If this week repeated for the next twelve months...
Would you be scaling?
Would you be enjoying the journey? 🤔
If you need to make a change, here are three of my top tips...
First, treat your diary as a leadership system.
Use a digital calendar that allows structure, visibility, and boundaries.
Paper diaries don’t scale. They usually look like hostage notes.
Second, design "working on" the business time.
At least 20% of your time should be spent on strategy, systems, and leadership. Schedule that time as a recurring, non-negotiable appointment.
Third, plan for reality, not optimism.
Assume things will take longer than expected. Build buffers. Protect white space. You’re capable and human. Have realistic expectations.
This, my friend, is how you dominate your diary. Not through control. But through design and intention.
Have a great (planned) week.
