Why Knowing Your Numbers is Non-Negotiable

Some of you may know that in a previous life, I was an accountant—that’s where my career began. And because of that, one thing I’m deeply passionate about is helping business owners truly understand their numbers.

Too often, I’ll ask a business owner questions like:

• What were your sales last month?

• What was your turnover?

• What were your profits?

And I’ll get blank stares.

But here’s the thing: running your business without knowing these numbers is like playing tennis without a scoreboard. How can you win the game if you don’t know where you stand?

I urge you—if you do nothing else today—take time to sit down and review your numbers. Look at what’s been happening in your business over the last:

• Month

• Six months

• Twelve months

Becoming financially literate isn't just helpful—it’s essential.

It’s super-important as a business owner that you prioritise understanding your numbers and becoming financially literate. How can you change your strategies if you don't know the state of play?

Please, please, please, I urge you if you do nothing else today, that you sit down and look at your numbers. What's been happening in your business for the last month, six months, 12 months? What do you need to change?
